Biography
Debbie immigrated from South Africa to the USA in 1986. Though she did not pursue a degree or career in fine art, for many years she had a yearning to portray the beauty of nature she observed. In 2006, she took a Pastel class taught by pastel artist Carmella Jarvi through Queens University’s Center for Lifelong Learning, Charlotte, North Carolina, and fell in love with the medium. She has studied with local pastel artists Greg Barnes and Diane Pike, and has taken workshops with nationally renowned pastel artists Terry Ludwig, Greg Biolchini, Liz Haywood-Sullivan, Barbara Jaenicke, Terri Ford and Kim Lordier. Debbie is the President of the Piedmont Pastel Society, 2013 and 2014. Her work has received several awards: Award of Excellence, North Carolina Statewide Pastel Exhibition 2012; Best in Show, Piedmont Pastel Society Member Show 2013; and Award of Excellence, NC Statewide Pastel Exhibition 2014. Her work is primarily representational, and she paints both landscapes and wildlife. She resides in Charlotte, North Carolina.
